Need I say more

‘Someday In the distant future, our grandchildren’s grandchildren will develop a new equivalent of our classrooms. They will spend many hours in front of boxes with fires glowing within. May they have the wisdom to know the difference between light and knowledge’----Plato ,

Podcasting, yet another delight while your busy

With my upgraded technology I have ventured into the updated version of listening to the radio....Podcasting....I used to listen to Alister Cook's Letter from America over the years while refusing to get up until it was over. Now I can indulge this old habit with all my own interests. On a related Project and Career focus I came across the National Gallery Podcast of a venetian Painter Veronese who rose to fame as a fresco painterhttp://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/podcasts/the-national-gallery-podcast-episode-eighty-nine. With this Audio capability I have my own subjects, just like listening to BBC World Service and Radio 4 rolled into one. I will indulge my learners with this on my Wiki. This recording can also be found on sub heading 'Venturing out and still learning'
Till later.

Another Fab discovery on a wiki Google site

For Learners to make comments on your site(Wiki) you need to get to  your hosting google email account- go to the site -cog(think its called settings)-site actions-manage site-general(on left hand side)-sharing and permissions-add your students email account in invite people---Job done---- this allows learners to add comments to the bottom section of each page in the various subsections that have been created----DA DA ----magic!!!!
Incidentally my site is https://sites.google.com/site/artisticskillsuwtsd/ and its fab!! Any one wishing to comment email me p143804@gmail.com or lionel_powell@yahoo.ie.  Best wishes one and all

Getting your Information on Moodle for Learners

I created a Powerpoint presentation for a group of learners and wanted to get it to them before the workshop/ Lecture, so they could maximise workshop time. I came a cropper as the file was too big. It had links to Youtube, and beautiful clear high quality images. The requirement was to get it on Moodle. This was difficult to achieve at first, because there is a limit of 30mb to each file. To over come this it is necessary to manipulate the image resolution using Photoshop (PS).

The steps are on PS;  File-Open-Choose a large photo. Image- Image size-select 72 dpi in Resolution box. File- Save As-ppname image.jpeg. Save into a New folder (photos forPowerpoint). With the omission of two images and this reduction process The file was reduced from 31mb down to 18mb. This then uploaded successfully thus enabling Learners to access information that was approved, thus avoiding the hassle of sifting trough much  distracting info. on the web.

Some tips from lesson delivery if your ICT lets you down.

Bring Learners into a semicircle having got suitable seating if required. Stand at the central point of this half circle with your backup documentation and have this in hand to show to learners, rotating and displaying  to the group as required. Let them have these images or documents for short short periods and retrieve as required for showing to the group. Also on hand, your notes to yourself Printed Large. These notes form part of your document Lesson Plan, that is ,Introduction, Main Body and Plenary. Take your time, be prepared to skip parts of PowerPoint that are not critical, be ever mindful of your time. Whatever charm or subtle sense of humour you have use it as you deliver. Know your subject, deliver with a light touch and do not say anything that is not accurate. Accept information from your learners with grace and gratitude believe in yourself and delivered with excitement and passion. These coupled with a certain level of Blarney stood me in good stead on my first Lesson Observation.

TIPS ON LISTENING; What's wrong with contemporary art: Jane Deeth at TEDxHobart

I found this very interesting at several level; The Art world, rearing a child/ future young adult and From an aspiring Educators point of view. The Key point being made is to listen, which at times can be quite difficult to listen and understand what is being said

How the Questions are imbedded

To Imbed questions and quizzes for Learners to engage fully with subject content I would recommend using https://polldaddy.com/login/ It is Fairly easy to use, I say that guardedly as I was coached trough the process. I have managed to imbed photos as part of the quiz since

When you get in to the different Sub sections you will come across a small link to the Questions and this Screen shot shows some of the Layout that you meet. I am however disappointed that the Website does not present it better or more obviously, In my opinion Learners could use this as an excuse to miss the Questions on the page. I do hope to place a series of questions like these on each page subject to time.

Fresco Workshop

I still don't know how I managed to get it all done and Recorded

The look of my Web site as mentioned earlier

The above is a screen shot of my web site created through Google sites. When in college It doesn't work but it seems to at Home. There are some restrictions I gather at College Placement, so one ends up with a blank video screen for a very interested class of Fresco learners, quite frustrating.

Oh by the way I have recently come across the button combination that takes a screen shot on my Mac they are Shift, command, 4. Then pull the target, on screen, icon across and down the image using both fingers on the pad, when you stop you will hear a camera click. the resulting image ends up on the Desk top and can be used from there!!!!!! A F.....G amazing
PS be sure to place the curser near where you want to copy! then follow the steps above.

You might also take note in the first 2 sub headings there are questions asked in the form of a quiz / multiple choice style format. Have fun

Developing VLE and Evolving Technology

Without the help and experience of others I would be lost, so many thanks to you all!!! https://sites.google.com/site/artisticskillsuwtsd/home This is the Website I am developing for Learners to connect with my knowledge of Fresco Painting. I have chosen Google Sites because it is linked in with all my other stuff so Compatibility is a big issue for me. That is cut to the chase make life easy, or at least that is the hope. I have found the workings of the site workman like. Not flashy and somewhat similar to working this blog. As new Technology has evolved so fast, I have worked on the premice stick to what you know to get the hang of the newer process. I stayed with Nokia phones for years, they brought me along the way nicely. With Smart phones I chose Samsung as my partner had one so I could get some help. Now with guidance in College I have Jumped int Mack BookPro. I must say I am finding is relatively painless. As ever I do ask for help, but this is nowhere as much as when I was entering College a few years ago as a mature student like a wild animal in front of the Screen.

This Video works well but many like it are a disappointment. I am a bit frustrated with the Licensing Laws or what ever the Blocks are to Downloading Videos. All the work done, then in College it doesn't  work. My advise is to stay close to anything that might come from a learning Institution or Public Information, these links/ Urls tend to work when imbedded  into e-document for e-learning
This image and the video is the source of much exasperation with my efforts to get it embedded into my Web site that is part of Google sites.....GURRRRRR.
PS Currently it is working so fingers crossed

Another Dewey Video for us all to absorb and a pleasant Workshop

This is inspiring, uplifting informative and a great guide for any Educator to have in mind as they interact with Learners.
PS. I had a workshop yesterday with Foundation Arts& Design, who are now starting to specialise . Thursday is my afternoon to pass over some skills that are a bit different to Drawing and Painting. I chose to explore Bas Relief fhttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bas_relief_carving_at_Ryerson.jpg. I was a bit unsure as to how many would turn up. I went around to the various studios and explained briefly what was on offer. I had about 12 from a few different specialties, and virtually all stayed to the end of the session, working well and apparently enjoying the process throughout.

John Dewey Curriculum & Education

I found this video recently It is a good summary of his work tied in with contemporary issues in Education & Curriculum. I hope you find it useful
